Rose quartz is a member of the largest family of stones, the silica group and is composed of silicon dioxide with traces of titanium. It emits a calming, cooling energy which can work on all of the chakras to gently remove negativity and to reinstate the loving, gentle forces of self-love. The pink colour of rose quartz has been symbolic of love throughout the ages.

Pink rhodonite, ametamorphic maganese silicate, contrasts with the black maganese oxide veins running throughout many of the pieces. As a healing stone, it helps express confidence and a loving nature. It also assists in placing other’s influence in perspective and calms the soul through the heart. In antiquity, rhodonite was given to travelers as a protective stone, it was said to warn them of imminent danger by causing the heartbeat to accelerate suddenly.

In translation, japa means repetitive prayer and mala means garland. The beads are used to count repetitions of prayers, chants or mantras to aid one's focus on the meaning or sound of the mantra. One repetition is usually said for each bead while turning the bead clockwise with the thumb.

Malas were traditionally used by the Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh traditions, however their use has spread to western culture. The 109th bead is the sumeru or guru bead, counting should start and end on either side of this bead. There are many styles of holding and using the mala and many types of mantras, therefore individual research is recommended to find the style that works for each individual.

A good mantra to get started with is Om Mani Padme Hum which essentially stands for universal compassion.
